Frequently asked questions

Osmolality (the science of absorption):

HOIST is an isotonic beverage, which means it has the same concentration of electrolytes, carbohydrates, and fluids as your body’s natural plasma. Because of this balance, HOIST doesn’t need to be diluted or digested before absorption. It moves directly from your stomach into your bloodstream faster than hypertonic (too concentrated) or hypotonic (too diluted) drinks.

Electrolyte ratio:

HOIST has 3x the electrolytes of traditional sports drinks (like sodium, potassium, and magnesium) but without excessive sugar or additives that slow absorption. This helps replace what you lose in sweat quickly and keeps fluid in your system longer.

Less sugar, more balance:

Many sports drinks are loaded with sugar, which slows gastric emptying (how fast fluids leave the stomach).
HOIST has about half the sugar of traditional sports drinks, which means it hydrates without the energy crash or stomach upset.

Clinically tested:

HOIST is one of the only hydration drinks approved for use by the U.S. Department of Defense, because testing showed it hydrates faster and sustains hydration longer.

HOIST is one of the only three hydration drinks approved by the U.S. Department of Defense. It’s supplied to bases worldwide for use in operational rations and field feeding to keep America's service members hydrated in the toughest conditions.

Isotonic hydration requires a small, precise amount of carbohydrates to support absorption. If the sugar was removed (like water or zero/low calorie sports drinks), your body would have to pull carbohydrates from the body into the gut to hydrate - slowing down the hydration process.

While HOIST isn’t sugar-free, it uses less sugar than typical sports drinks.

Sodium is the electrolyte you lose most in
sweat, so it’s the most important to replace. Our electrolyte profile is designed to mirror sweat losses during activity.

A balanced blend of:

  • Sodium chloride: moves water across cell boundaries
  • Potassium chloride: supports sodium balance
  • Magnesium: helps muscles relax
  • Calcium: supports normal muscle contraction, heartbeat, and nerve signaling

Isotonic means the drink’s concentration of electrolytes and carbohydrates is similar to
your body’s fluids. This concentration allows water and electrolytes to move efficiently to where they’re needed.
